Back in the early 90s, one of my first attempts at computer art was to create the cover of a chapbook of poetry using Freehand. I spent most of my time with Quark back then but I always desperately wanted to be able to draw so I had also purchased (Aldus, at the time, later Macromedia and now Adobe?) Freehand.
Anyway, I don't remember how I did it but as you can see, I made the words seem part of the venetian blinds. Granted, this is not great art but I am a poet and writer first and everything else after. So when I came across this easy and fun light and shade tutorial at psd tuts+ I had to try it.
In a very limited way, I have learned some drawing techniques but I'll never be great or even very good but I can get close with design software. My daughter, on the other hand, uses drawing as a break from digital art. At least, now we speak the same language.
